Long Island Railroad is always reminding customers about keeping their feet off the seats and talking low on cell phones, which of course is a good idea. But do you think they would follow their own advice?
The 2:52 pm train out of Penn Station was overcrowded with Dashing Dans and Dotties leaving work early for the 4th of July Holiday. The train leaves with no apparent problem, but just after New Hyde Park the train reduces speed to a slow crawl and the air conditioning in our car shuts down. it isn't a hot day, but with the train packed, the car begins to warm up quickly. A woman across from me is starting to come to a boil and we wonder why they do not make any announcements. Sweat just starts to gather on my brow and now my pissed meter starts to register. I begin to grit my teeth and tense up as I prepare to let loose with an expletive-laced rant. Before my relief valve lifts, the air conditioning decides to come on and everyone lets out a collective sigh of relief. The woman across from me looks over and says, "62 f**king minutes! I could have taken the f**king Long Island Expressway, it would have been faster! (Note: for the uninitiated or out-of-towner, the Long Island Expressway a.k.a. LIE is also referred to as the world’s largest parking lot.)
Arriving at my destination, the station announcement declares that there are 20 to 30-minute delays out of Penn Station due to switching problems. This raises a few questions but the real question is why didn't they make an announcement on the train?
